Doris E. Griffiths

October 11, 1930 - November 25, 2021

Doris Ellen "Dorie" Griffiths passed away in Ashland on Thanksgiving morning,November 25, 2021 at the age of 91. Doris was born October 10, 1930 in Sacaton, Arizona to Robert Hibbs Peebles and Hazel Maud Cronkhite. She was raised in Sacaton and Casa Grande Arizona on the USDA agricultural experiment station where her father helped develop the seedless Pima Cotton strain. Dorie, as she was known in her youth, helped pick cotton and spoke often of swimming in irrigation ditches with her best friends, all local native Americans. Doris went on to graduate from Arizona State University and was soon licensed as an elementary teacher in Tucson where she taught for several years. Doris married Henry W Griffiths, whom she met in college, in 1952 in Sacaton, Arizona, in a dual ceremony with her sister Barbara Jean and Charles Weatherwax. Doris and Bill lived in California for many years before settling in Ashland in 1971 where they owned and operated Leighs Sports and Hardware until 1981. Doris then worked for many years with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. She was an active Soroptomist in Ashland and avid square dancer. Doris was preceded in death by her parents, siblings (Roger and Barbara Jean), and husband Bill. She is survived by her sons Robert (Kathy) of Juneau AK, Richard (Dalene) of Battle Mt. NV, and Michael (Jennifer) of Central Point, eight grandchildren ,and eleven great-grandchildren. A Celebration of Life is being planned for the spring of 2022.
