Mary Alice Smith Thorpe, 94, of Medford, Oregon, went home to be with the Lord on February 28, 2021. Mary was born November 1, 1926 in Baytown, Texas, and was also formerly a resident of Ashland and Talent, Oregon. She attended Baytown area schools and Southwest Texas State Teachers College, and was employed by school districts in the Baytown area. She was a member of Pruett & Lobit Church of Christ in Baytown, and the Grape Street Church of Christ in Medford, Oregon. During her working years, Mary was an active member and office holder at the local and state levels of the Texas Educational Secretaries Association (TESA). In retirement, she loved traveling to Hawaii and became an avid photographer. She was member of the Tudor Guild volunteer organization of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Mary was devoted to her family and would share stories about her grandkids and great-grandkids with everyone. She was a caring person who actively worked to bring people together at challenging times in U.S. history. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Moore Thorpe, Jr.; her husband’s parents Clarence Moore Thorpe, Sr. and Mattie Taylor Thorpe; brother-in-law Harry Alexander Thorpe; her parents Jessie Clifton Smith and Claudia Autry Smith; and her stepmother Annis Enloe Smith Lewis Stone. She is survived by her son Steven David (Penny) Thorpe; her daughter Jo Ellen Thorpe (Dan) Eppink; three grandchildren Kristen G. Gunn, Joshua (Sally) Thorpe, Sarah Thorpe (Miguel Fernandez de Lara); great-grandchildren Roam, Jane, Ethan, and Mia; sisters-in-law Winona Thorpe Harris and Anita Thorpe Gay; her cousin Leveata Enloe Griffin; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Mary’s family is extremely grateful for the superb care provided for Mary by the caregivers and staff at Fountain Plaza in Medford. Interment will be at the Thorpe Family Cemetery, Greensville County, Virginia. Memorial contributions in Mrs. Thorpe’s name may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society at www.lls.org or the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at www.stjude.org/donate/donate-to-st-jude.
