August 21, 1951 - November 19, 2019
Norma Jeanne Grenfell of Ashland, Oregon passed away Tuesday, November 19, 2019 at the age of 68. Norma was born in West Palm Beach, Florida on August 21, 1951 to Wm. Richard H. Grenfell and Edna Mae Gatlin. She graduated from Palm Beach High School in 1969 where she played the flute in the marching band. Norma attended the University of Florida and graduated from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia with a bachelor’s degree in nursing in 1973. She was selected for the US Navy (USN) Officer Candidate Program and was commissioned as an Ensign in 1973. During Norma’s active duty and reserves career, she was stationed in Newport, RI; Philadelphia, PA; Bremerton WA; Yokosuka, Japan, and Treasure Island, CA. Norma proudly retired as a Captain after 37 years in the USN Nurse Corps in 2010. In 1984, Norma started a career spanning 25 years with the law firm, Gordon & Rees LLP, in San Francisco where she worked as the firm’s first nurse consultant. A continuous learner, Norma also earned her MBA in health services management from Golden Gate University. Norma welcomed her son, Eric, to the world in 1986. Living in Marin County, CA, she and Eric enjoyed many adventures together. Norma once cycled in the 7-day AIDS ride from Los Angeles to San Francisco. She also loved to sing and was in the church choir at Westminster Presbyterian Church. During Eric’s teen years, the two traveled to Alaska for hiking, biking, kayaking, and camping. They shared a love for theatre performances which is how Norma discovered and fell in love with Ashland. She and Eric would road trip from Marin County to Ashland each summer to attend the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. In 2010, Norma relocated to Ashland where she spent three years working as a nurse manager with Harry & David before fully retiring. Norma had an appreciation for both the arts and animals and volunteered with both the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and the Friends of the Jackson County Animal Shelter. She especially loved her own animals and spoke often about her furry family members, Katie the Weimaraner, Lucy the black lab, and Tango the tabby cat. Norma is preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Edna Grenfell. She is survived by her son, Eric Grenfell-Phillips of Seattle, WA; a brother, Rick (Roberta) Grenfell of Spring, TX; a nephew, Chuck (Amy) Grenfell of Cheyenne, WY; a great-niece and great-nephew, Caitlin Grenfell and Alex Grenfell; as well as, numerous dear friends in Marin County and Ashland. Arrangements are in care of Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home in Ashland and a celebration of life will be held at a later date. If inclined, donations can be made in Norma’s memory to Village at Valley View, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, or the Jackson County Animal Shelter all in Ashland.
